Groningen is the most student-filled city in the Netherlands: one in four people is a student. The Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (1614) has many English-taught degrees, and Hanze provides the more practical side. It's in the north, far from the Randstad, but cheaper: a room costs around €565 a month.

Accommodation
Finding a home in Groningen
For years Groningen has had a shortage of rooms at the start of the academic year, and prices have risen sharply. Some listings don't accept international students, so it's best to start early and rely on the residences.
Check the SSH residences and the university's housing portal as soon as you're admitted.
Try to arrive with accommodation already sorted: searching in person in August is much harder.
Never pay a deposit without a signed contract or without checking who the owner is.
City life
What it's like to live in Groningen
With so many students, the city lives at its own pace: bars open late, societies for everything and a centre that cars barely enter. Everything is 10 minutes away by bike.
A car-free city
The centre is designed for bikes and pedestrians: it's one of the most cycling-friendly cities in the world.
Noorderzon
A festival of theatre, music and art every August in Noorderplantsoen park.
Martinitoren
The city's emblematic tower, with views over the whole province.
